Algae Helps You Survive a Toxic World

, by Catharine Arnston, 16 min reading time

Toxicity exists all around us, but you can do something about it with the detoxifying properties of Chlorella.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why you need to protect yourself against toxins
  • Why Chlorella is a safe and easy solution to remove toxins.
  • Why algae harvested in freshwater is safe and toxin-free

In the spirit of going back to school, raise your hands if you often get confused and overwhelmed when thinking about your health? Are you raising your hand yet? Because we sure are! It seems that every day, there is a new health claim released, a new fad diet to follow or a frightening news story that makes us want to completely empty out our kitchens and live in a sterilized bubble. Our food supply and air quality have drastically changed over the years and not for the better. It was reported that one in five deaths globally (that’s about 11 million people) in 2017 was due to poor diet alone <1>. It’s no secret that we are becoming less and less healthy as more and more toxins/pesticides are released into our world.

Toxicity is all around us…

There have been 80,000 chemicals released into the world since WWII <2> which is bad enough, but the number of environmental hazards/spills (radiation leaks, oil tanker spills, etc.) has continued to increase making our toxic load now unbearable <3>. Our immune systems weren’t built for this, and as they get maxed out, we get sicker and sicker.

A woeful example of this was earlier this year when Tyson Foods issued a terrifying recall of 11.8 million pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products due to metal fragment contamination <4>. Tyson’s is one of the largest food producers in the world and not only was this a massive recall, but it was also the fourth time they had to make a recall in 2019 for having non-food items in their chicken. In this most recent case, the fragments found in the chicken were highly toxic pieces of lead and heavy metals. And if that wasn’t scary enough, Tyson announced that from now on they’ll be using X-RAY MACHINES to examine every single one of their meat products. Now you will be eating irradiated meat when you purchase from them. Not sure which is worse – the metals or the radiation! No wonder so many people are turning to a plant-based diet. It may be the best way to protect your health.

Tyson’s contamination scare comes on the heels of a study showing several leading brands of baby foods, and formulas tested positive for arsenic, lead, and BPA <5>. It used to be that heavy metals were mostly limited to mercury fillings, and fish like tuna. But now toxins are everywhere and showing up in new places all the time. The scariest part of it all, we can’t see or taste these toxins, and the cumulative load of these toxins is making us sicker every day (not to mention that our environment is getting sicker too).

Here are some signs you may be suffering from toxicity:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Sleep issues
  • Bloating
  • Sinus congestion
  • Water retention
  • Digestive issues
  • Skin conditions (such as eczema and psoriasis)
  • Acne
  • Cravings
  • Mood changes

We know you’re doing your best to stay healthy (you wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t care). So, we don’t want you to panic! Reducing your exposure to toxins and removing the ones that are already there is not a quick fix. Fortunately, an easy solution is at hand – chlorella algae. Chlorella has been used worldwide for decades by doctors, biological dentists, and functional/holistic wellness practitioners because it is a natural, safe, and highly potent detoxing solution <6>. Want to learn why? Good! Let’s dive in…

Back to the basics of algae

We know you love algae like we do, but have you ever wondered what algae actually is and how it can all of a sudden appear out of nowhere? (no, it’s not magic, but it does have some pretty cool superhero strengths). I’m sure you have either seen algae on a pond or heard about it on the news. Algae comes in many different shapes, species, colors, and sizes ranging from microscopic to over 100ft long. It has been on earth for billions of years (yep, we said billions!) and is found all over the world. It can grow in freshwater, saltwater, or a combination of both. Algae is considered an important part of the planet, although not many people understand the critical role it plays in supporting our ocean and overall ecosystem (not to mention our health!). Algae can be toxic, but ONLY if it is found growing wild (oceans, lakes, swimming pools, etc.). Algae that is carefully harvested as an agricultural crop in freshwater tanks (like ENERGYbits®) is NOT toxic and is in fact quite likely the safest, purest, nutrient-dense non-toxic food you will ever put in your body. Ever.

The spirulina and chlorella grown by ENERGYbits® are the safest, purest food you’ll ever put in your body because they are grown in triple-filtered spring mountain water and tested by FDA-approved third-party labs for purity.

Unfortunately, many media or internet posts make it appear that algae does nothing but pollute our waters. But this is simply untrue. Yes, sometimes you will hear that beaches have been closed due to “toxic overgrowth of algae,” but we want you to understand that it’s not the algae that’s causing the problem, it’s the toxins in the water that attracted the algae. The algae is just the result of the toxins. It is not the cause of them. Furthermore, algae is NOT toxic when it is grown as an agricultural crop. That’s why we want to help you understand algae a bit better. Algae is just misunderstood. Aren’t we all? So, please keep reading so we can help clear algae’s good name!

Algae is an important part of our natural ecosystem

Did you know that less than one percent of algae blooms actually produce toxins? Let’s repeat that… LESS THAN ONE PERCENT of algae blooms are toxic <7>. Are you starting to see why algae gets a bad rap in the news? Only a very small percentage of algae produce toxins that can kill fish, shellfish, mammals, and birds, or cause illness (either directly or indirectly) in people <8>. The words “algae” and “toxicity” are often used in the same sentence. But remember less than 1% of algae is toxic and IF toxic algae appears in the water, it is only because there are already toxins there! Furthermore, algae ONLY contains toxins when it is GROWN WILD (in lakes, oceans, etc.). This is because ALGAE ABSORBS WHATEVER IS IN THE WATER. So….if the water is polluted/toxic; clearly anything growing in it will also be toxic. Makes sense, right? But when algae is carefully grown in freshwater as a harvested food crop, it is NOT toxic (spoiler alert -the spirulina and chlorella algae grown by ENERGYbits® is grown hydroponically in triple-filtered spring mountain water and tested in the USA by FDA-approved labs that prove our algae tablets are 100% toxin-free, including NO neurotoxins like BMAA). That’s why ENERGYbits® algae tablets may be the safest, purest food you’ll ever put in your body– but more on that later!

But let’s get back to algae in the wild! In order for an algae bloom to occur there needs to be sunlight, slow-moving water and an excess amounts of toxins already found in the water ( wastewater, animal waste, human waste, run-off from agriculture or fossil fuels, etc.) <9>. The bloom appears after a body of water has been contaminated and occurs more frequently in summer months when more people or contaminants are in the water <10>. Since algae kill bacteria, they are attracted to water that has a high bacterial count, and since algae multiplies rapidly, this results in “algae blooms.” But keep in mind it wasn’t the algae that created the original toxic condition! The algae only showed up as a result of higher levels of pollution in the water (which also kills the fish and plants which in turn contributes more organic food/matter for the bacteria to feed on and attract even more algae). With more food available, the bacteria increase in number, and this uses up the oxygen in the water. When the oxygen content in the water decreases, fish and aquatic insects cannot survive, and this can lead to a harmful algae bloom (HAB).

But remember not all algae blooms are harmful. In fact, most algae is essential to maintain our ecosystem! It is these tiny microalgae that provide food for all life in our oceans and lakes (from large whales to tiny shrimp). Algae use sunlight as an energy source which allows them to convert carbon dioxide into cellular tissue, and in the process, they release oxygen resource. In fact, most algae INCREASE the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, and this is what makes the water healthy for fish and other sea creatures who live in the ecosystem. But algae is important for us land creatures too! In fact, over 70% of the earth’s oxygen comes from algae <11>. So, let’s all have a moment of gratitude for algae and give algae a pat on the back for helping us breathe! Namaste.

Chlorella to the rescue…

Now that we have shed some light on toxicity in our world (and that algae isn’t the culprit) let’s take this a little further and explain how algae can actually help you take toxins OUT of your body. (Alexa play “Isn’t it Ironic” by Alanis Morissette).

Did you know that algae has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world? Especially chlorella algae which has 1,000 times more chlorophyll than most greens <12>. Chlorophyll is the pigment that makes plants green and is a powerful cleansing nutrient (chlorophyll is the reason why your mother always told you to eat your greens!). To give you a hint of how important chlorophyll is to your health, consider the fact that chlorophyll and your blood have virtually the same chemical composition! The only difference is that your hemoglobin has an iron atom in the middle and chlorophyll has a magnesium atom in the middle. Other than this, they are virtually identical. (see below)

Molecular arrangement of Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll
Comparison of a Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll Molecule

Even more important than its high concentration of chlorophyll is chlorella’s unique ability to pull out heavy metals and any kind of toxin including mercury, lead or radiation (even alcohol and lactic acid!). This is why chlorella has been used for decades as a chelator and recovery solution. It was even used at Chernobyl, Hiroshima, and more recently, Fukushima <13>.

The reason why chlorella algae is able to remove toxins is due to its hard cellular wall, which attaches to toxins and pulls them out of your cells, organs, and blood and carries them safely out of your body. There is nothing else that can remove toxins as safely and naturally as chlorella algae. Taking chlorella every day is like giving your body a shower from the inside! And as an extra bonus, at the same time the chlorella is removing toxins from your body, it is also flooding your body, brain and immune system with forty vitamins and minerals to further improve your health and wellness.

Bottom line:

If you don’t remove toxins and metals from your body, your health can suffer. Heavy metals are a factor contributing to many chronic health conditions, especially those which can’t be explained through normal diagnostics or testing.

So, if you feel tired, suffer from brain fog, have a hard time sleeping, have chronic pain or suffer from other chronic health issues, toxic heavy metals could be the culprit. Some of these conditions may be worse if you live on the west coast of the United States due to the increased radiation exposure there. Approximately 300 tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima disaster enters the Pacific Ocean every day <14>, and the clean-up may take decades. You need to protect yourself from this radiation and other toxins. The most important step you can take is adding chlorella algae to your daily routine. Chlorella has been shown to remove radiation from the body and is the easiest, most natural way to protect you and your family. Pets too!

Why you can trust our algae…

Now that you understand how important algae is for removing toxins and contributing to your overall wellbeing (and the wellbeing of our planet!) please don’t drink a cup of algae from your fish tank or local lake. Remember, not all algae is safe! You only want to consume algae like spirulina or chlorella that have been harvested as a food crop in clean, freshwater. But please always check your supplier because not all algae companies have the same high standards, same quality control or same product integrity as ENERGYbits®. For example, our chlorella is the only chlorella (that we are aware of) that is guaranteed to have no heavy metals like lead. Virtually all other chlorella has lead in it because most algae companies use an older technique for cracking the chlorella cell wall, which is to tumble it with glass beads. But when the glass beads heat up, lead from it leaks into the chlorella. In contrast, at ENERGYbits®, we do NOT use the glass bead technique, and instead, we use a much more modern technique which is to pass the chlorella through a sound chamber where the sound vibrations crack the chlorella. Our technique guarantees there is no lead in the chlorella.

In fact, the purity, safety, and high-quality control of our algae is one of the reasons we are endorsed by doctors, nutritionists, and Olympic athletes. We also provide health professionals with copies of our lab test results from third-party FDA-approved labs who test our algae. These tests confirm the nutritional density, purity, and safety of our algae, including 100% absence of neurotoxins like BMAA. That’s why we urge you to be careful when purchasing algae from other companies. ENERGYbits® is hyper-focused on providing you with the safest, most nutrient-dense, eco-friendly way to fuel your performance, protect your health, and ensure you and your family have the cleanest nutrition for optimal vitality. For fifty years, tens of millions in Asia have benefited from algae. Now it’s your turn! Find out why our algae, considered the safest and best.
