What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a fresh water blue green algae that was the first plant life on earth (along with chlorella) billions of years ago. It is so concentrated with nutrition that forty years ago, the World Bank and United Nations declared it to be the healthiest food in the world. Its nutritional profile is so impressive that the scientific, nutrition, sports and medical communities have conducted over 100,000 scientific studies about its health benefits (along with chlorella).Spirulina provides the highest concentration of protein in the world, all in the form of essential amino acids for muscle, health and cellular growth. It also has over 40 nutrients for full spectrum health and its natural nitric oxide provides immediate and enduring physical and mental energy.
Spirulina is nature’s equivalent to an energy drink – but its even better because it’s 100% natural, 100% green, is carbon neutral, has only ONE calorie per tab and contains no sugar, no caffeine, no chemicals, no gluten and no soy. It is the richest source of protein in the world (60% - 70%), has more beta carotene, more antioxidants, more iron than any other food and is second only to mothers milk in its concentration of GLA – an essential fatty acid that is critical to brain health and behaves like an Omega 3. Spirulina is also rich in all the B vitamins, all the electrolytes and other minerals you need to be healthy, including zinc.. In short, spirulina algae is your green dream (and green team) come true. It is the easiest and fastest way to be revived and energized. Even better, unlike energy drinks or protein drinks, spirulina tabs don't need to be served cold and unlike protein powders they don't need to be mixed. Nope, all you need to do with our spirulina tabs (ENERGYbits® or SKINNYbits®) is open your tin/bag, shake a handful into your mouth and you are done. Instant and enduring energy to fire up your brain and body. Guess that's why spirulina has been a favorite of Olympic Athletes and NASA astronauts for over four decades. It’s your turn now.

Why does Spirulina improve workouts or anything that requires physical effort?
Spirulina is a nitrogen based algae which naturally releases nitric oxide in your body. You may be wondering what nitric oxide is and why is it important …so hang on and we’ll tell you. The merits of nitric oxide supplements have only recently come to the attention of the athletic community. What follows is a quick guide to one of the most important molecules known to professional athletes and now you!
What Is Nitric Oxide?
Nitric Oxide is a compound made up of one nitrogen atom and one oxygen atom. In order for the body to create Nitric Oxide, it must do so with the help of arginine (an amino acid) and a family of enzymes called Nitric Oxide synthase (NOS). When arginine and a NOS enzyme come in contact with each other, the reaction produces Nitric Oxide along with citrulline (another amino acid).
What Does Nitric Oxide Do?
Nitric Oxide travels freely from cell to cell in your body directing and ordering a wide variety of functions within the body. Depending on the situation, Nitric Oxide can act as an intracellular messenger, a hormone, or a neurotransmitter. However, for the purpose of athletes, we'll focus on the role of Nitric Oxide as an intracellular messenger regulating one of the body's most important processes--blood flow (this is where it could get naughty).
How Does Nitric Oxide Work?
Nitric Oxide is produced within the cells that line the inside of blood vessels. When these cells are stimulated--such as when the muscle contracts--it synthesizes and releases Nitric Oxide. Once released, Nitric Oxide diffuses across the cell membrane into the adjacent smooth muscle tissue of the blood vessels, causing them to relax and widen (a process called vasodilation). The result is an increase in blood flow to the stimulated area, which ultimately causes your muscles to get pumped and stay that way for around 40 minutes afterwards. But keep in mind, It helps everything in your body get more blood flow. Know what I mean jelly bean?
So why do your muscles get stronger when you work out? Well, basically, blood, which is the body's primary transport medium, carries all the vital nutrients (e.g., amino acid, creatine, glucose, and oxygen) to the muscle, which are required for energy production, growth, and maintenance. Working out causes more of this to occur! Additionally, blood carries away the byproducts of metabolism (e.g., carbon dioxide and lactic acid) that fatigue the muscle and inhibit performance. Increasing blood flow to the muscle enhances growth, strength development, and recuperation. Its really that simple.
Spirulina has been shown to cause improvements in vascular tone by increasing the synthesis and release of nitric oxide, which is what helps your muscles get more blood, oxygen & nutrients brought to them so you get stronger and recover more quickly!

The most avid believers in the health benefits of spirulina are the Japanese, who both produce and consume more algae than anyone else in the world. And since the Japanese have some of the best longevity stats in the world, maybe they’re on to something. They knew about sushi before we did in America and that was pretty good so we hope you'll give spirulina algae a try too. And when you do, your body will do summersaults it will be so energized by the nutrition you're giving it! But on a more serious note, research has found that because of spirulina’s high concentration of nutrients and protein it not only curbs your appetite, gives you energy and eliminates brain fog, it also helps you lose weight, control cravings, helps diabetics decrease their insulin intake and even helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
So here is a partial list of the nutritional goodies in our spirulina tabs. Spirulina is truly out of this world it is so packed with nutrition. Maybe that’s why NASA feeds it to the astronauts? Gram per gram, there is no denser source of nutrition that spirulina or chlorella. NASA has even been quoted to say “the nutrition in 1 kg of spirulina is equivalent to the nutrition in 1,000 kg of assorted fruits and vegetables”. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take a fast handful of ENERGYbits® or SKINNYbits® to get my nutrition for the day than lug home the 30-40 bags of groceries I’d need to get the same amount of nutrition. But if an endorsement by NASA isn’t enough to convince you of the health benefits you’ll get from spirulina, consider that for decades, most of the International Health Organizations including the United Nations and even Olympic athletes have hailed spirulina as one of the “Greatest Superfoods on Earth.”
Who should take Spirulina?
Everyone! But seriously, if you do not eat three balanced meals a day, do not get the recommended intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, are trying to lose weight, are trying to build muscle or improve your athletic performance, are on a restricted diet, travel a lot, work a lot, work out a lot, study a lot, worry a lot, party a lot or under a lot of stress, you should be taking at least 3-60 tabs of ENERGYbits® or SKINNYbits® every day. We figure that’s just about everyone. Including us.
What gives Spirulina its deep green color?
The natural plant pigments that give Spirulina its distinct color also provide numerous health benefits. These include chlorophyll (green), which helps cleanse the body of toxins, beta carotene (orange), a potent antioxidant, and phycocyanin (blue), which supports protein absorption and healthy immune function.
Is Spirulina safe for children, the elderly and pregnant/nursing women?
YES! For generations, people of all ages and of all cultures around the world have safely enjoyed the benefits of spirulina. In fact, spirulina was a food staple of many earlier cultures including the Aztecs of Mexico, who according to Spanish explorers from 1500, regularly featured spirulina as a dish at the dinner table. Spirulina was also a main food staple in the Lake Chad region of Africa. In Japan, research has shown that when babies are born with an intolerance to Mother’s Milk, they die if they are not fed spirulina daily. It seems that the blend of amino acids(protein) in spirulina and the high concentration of GLA (an essential fatty acid) in spirulina is almost identical to that found in mother’s milk. Spirulina seems to be the only thing that saves these babies (not soy milk, or any other formula). If spirulina is safe enough to save newborn babies, one has to believe it is safe enough for anyone of any age for any reason.
Is there any time when you shouldn’t take Spirulina and are there any negative side affects?
Out of 100,000 studies on spirulina and chlorella algae, no negative side affects appear to have been found. However we have had learned from one report that, if you are about to have surgery, just as you are usually asked by your doctor to stop taking Vitamin E or Fish Oil one week prior to surgery, you may also want to stop taking spirulina. This is ONLY because there is so much Essential Fatty Acid in spirulina (which helps clear your blood vessels) Note however there are NO Essential Fatty Acids in chlorella so you should not stop taking chlorella prior to surgery and indeed we recommend you take extra chlorella before and after any surgery or illness to help speed your recovery.
